History and Goals

HMFP was incorporated on May 1, 1998 when the Harvard Medical School (HMS) physician faculties then associated with Beth Israel Hospital and New England Deaconess Hospital merged into a single faculty practice plan. We are a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation governed by a Board of directors. HMFP was a member of CareGroup and employed more than 600 HMS faculty in 13 Departments. Initially the purpose was to protect and enhance operating revenues and build the capital reserve needed to assure the viability of all Departments in pursuing their clinical, research and teaching missions. It further promoted the alignment of financial incentives, better market staying power, referral enhancements, a common forum for assessment of business development and teaching programs, reduced administrative costs and coordination of financial planning.

APHMFP employs physicians and other allied health professionals who are physically working in organizations outside of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center or one of its subsidiaries.

In October 2006 HMFP realigned its corporate structure by withdrawing as a member of CareGroup and signing an exclusive Affiliation Agreement with BIDMC. We are now a full strategic, operating, and capital partner with BIDMC embracing the goal of ever improving the world class patient care, research and teaching programs for which BIDMC is famous.

At our core however HMFP is a professional organization focused on providing the best possible services to the now over 900 outstanding faculty who have chosen to work with us. These services include benefits management, payroll, comprehensive financial and accounting services, compliance training and oversight, business/project development, and revenue cycle analysis and tracking.
